Big Sur House on the Cliffs

Who wants to stay in this house on the cliffs overlooking the ocean in Big Sur? Or is it a hotel? I'm not really sure, but either way it has a great location with awesome views of Big Sur, CA. This is some of the most spectacular coastline of California.

McWay Falls, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park - Big Sur, CA

This is one of the most awesome coves along the CA coastline. How can you beat an 80 foot waterfall spilling right onto the beach, in a secluded cove? This is McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Big Sur, CA.

Of course, it would be way cooler to be standing on the beach below right next to (or underneath) the waterfall. I have wanted to do that ever since the first time I saw this falls (and I know the best route down), but have so far restrained myself due to the very clear signs telling you not to go down there. I have been told the fine is hefty.

The Floating Rock Island - Big Sur Coastline, CA

I love how this white (no doubt due to bird droppings) rock island seems to be suspended in the air, floating amidst the fog. The coastline along Big Sur is always changing along with the dynamic fog. No fancy HDR involved this time.

View from the Edge of the Cliffs - Montana De Oro State Park, CA

This is one of the best views in Montana De Oro State Park along the cliff trail. The chimney rock island that you see here has a cave or hole that goes all the way through to the other side. I used a really wide (16mm) lens to get the foreground in as much as possible.

Coastal Surge - Montana De Oro State Park, San Luis Obispo Coast, CA

Montana De Oro State Park near San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay boasts amazing coastline just waiting to be photographed. To capture this photo I added as many polarizers and ND filters as I could to get a slow shutter speed, since I was there in the middle of the day, but I wanted to show the movement of the ocean. I like the diagonal lines with the shape of the waves flowing over the shallow rocks.

Behind Bixby Bridge - Highway 1, Big Sur, CA

Morning light highlights Bixby Bridge against the shadowed Pacific behind. I drove up a dirt road to find this spot where the rocky island fit right under the arch of the bridge. I've been trying to be more intentional about my composition lately, and I think it paid off in this case. You may also be interested in my Bixby Bridge from Above photo which I posted recently (Big Sur, CA).

Portal to the Sun - Sea Arch at Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, CA

This is the portal, or sea arch rock at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, CA (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park). I took this photo right after the sun dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a yellow-orange glow. At high tide like this it's fun watching the waves funnel through the opening in the rock.

To get this photo, I raced down the windy road to Pfeiffer Beach and then dashed like a madman from my car down the path and across the beach a ways to this spot carrying my tripod and camera backpack. There were some couples on the beach leaving as I arrived, and I think they were a bit bewildered to see me zoom by and throw down my tripod. I had hoped to make it here before the sun actually set, but I'm happy I still was able to get a good shot.

Bixby Bridge from Above - Highway 1, Big Sur, CA

I climbed up to a precarious (and windy) outcropping to take this photo looking down on highway 1 in Big Sur, CA as it meets the famous Bixby Bridge. You can see the off-shore fog in the distance threatening to move inland, and the beautiful colors of the pacific ocean coastline.

This is an HDR image processed from 3 exposures 2 stops apart.
