Live Oak Silhouette

A lone California Live Oak silhouette with double starburst, black and white. I walked through lots of stickers to get in the right spot to get the sun starburst directly behind the oak’s tree trunk. I’ve never captured a double starburst like this before, but I really like what it adds to the silhouette, especially as a B&W photo (shooting at a small aperture like f/16 or f/22 is the best way to achieve this result). This particular live oaks was perfect for a silhouette photo with its distinct shape and balanced set of branches. I had originally envisioned a double silhouette with the oak that was next to this tree, but decided it was a bolder photo with the other live oak cropped out. This photo was taken in Concord, CA next to the California State University East Bay Concord Campus (CSUEB Concord Campus) which is a beautiful campus up on some hills.

For a different kind of oak silhouette, check out my previously posted Golden California Live Oaks Silhouette photo.

Mesquite Flat Dunes - Death Valley National Park

These are the Mesquite Flat Dunes near Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park. This photo was taken from the top of the highest dune looking northeast towards the rest of the dunes. The eastern part of Mesquite Dunes is the best place to go for photography since those dunes don't get as many footprints from visitors.

Mud Death Star - Bubbling Mud Pits of Rotorua

This "mud death star" is a big (around 1 foot in diameter) mud bubble captured at mid-burst using a fast shutter speed. This was part of a much bigger bubbling mud pit outside of Rotorua, New Zealand (Wai-O-Tapu). There were many such mud pits, each with its own interval and resulting shape. Some would bubble fast and not very high while others would erupt every couple minutes with mud spewing many feet into the air.

You may also be interested in my Champagne Pool on Mars photo which was also taken in the same area.

Storm in Milford Sound - New Zealand

Storm in Milford Sound - New Zealand

It rained for much of my short visit to Milford Sound, which isn't surprising considering it's the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest places in the world. Milford Sound has been known to receive 10 inches of rain in the span of 24 hours, which is about as much rain as Los Angeles gets in an entire year. Annual rainfall is over 22 feet (over 6.5 meters). But it isn't just always raining; the weather changed dramatically over the course of my 2-hour boat ride, even breaking up for some sun for a little while. In this photo you can see a new batch of rain descending down the steep glacier-carved peaks.

Shimmering Opera House - Sydney, Australia

It seems I will never tire of shooting the Sydney Opera House due to its interesting shapes and the way it catches the sunlight. There is always a new angle or different light to capture. The sun was bursting through the clouds this particular day. Shot from one of the Sydney ferries as we took our usual trip to Circular Quay from Milsons Point.

Portrait of a Papuan Boy - Black & White

This is my favorite portrait from the trip so far. I find myself looking at him just as intently as he is looking back. I've been trying to come up with a good title for this photo, but don't really know what to say. I guess it doesn't really need a title.

The Fisherman's House on Stilts

If you're a fisherman, why not live on stilts at the edge of the harbor? This family seems well equipped with several fish nets, a boat, outboard motor, and various other gear which you can see on their porch. I took this photo in Serui, Papua, Indonesia.

Italian Man Drinking Espresso on the Narrow Streets of Como, Italy

Italian Man Drinking Espresso on the Narrow Streets of Como, Italy

This photo seems to say "I am Italian." It shows a typical scene in Italy: narrow cobblestone streets between stone buildings, the Italian flag, a man on the street drinking his espresso, and a bar. I took this photo in the town of Como at the south end of Lake Como.

I processed this photo as an HDR from a single RAW image, then converted to black & white (with some sepia), and then mixed back in some of the original colors to highlight the Italian flag, sign for the bar, and the man.

Point Loma Cliffs - San Diego, CA

What drew me to this scene was the rock layers in the cliffs meeting the flowing ocean waves below. I feel like the scene works best as a black & white HDR to match the mood of the coastline. I took this photo in the same general area as my last Point Loma Cliffs photo.

Amish Farmers using a Horse-Drawn Hay Baler

I took this photo out the car window as we drove through Amish country near Intercourse, PA (no, I'm not making up that town name). Scenes like this are still very common in this part of the US, though I felt like I was in a different country. I find it interesting that their hay baler is horse-drawn, but the baler machine itself is automated. If you look closely you can spot their dog tagging along.

Bay Bridge Sailboat Silhouette - San Francisco, CA

The truck above and sailboat below give a sense of scale to the San Francisco Bay Bridge in this early morning silhouette. The original photo didn't have much color in it anyway, so I liked it as a black and white. I took this photo our last morning in San Francisco.

Winter Beauty in the High Sierra

And now for something completely different (no HDR involved): beautiful snow textures in the high Sierras. I took this photo near the side of highway 395 not too far from the turnoff for Crowley Lake on Sunday. What you can't see in this photo are my freezing feet. I waded into the deep snow wearing wet socks & sandals since I had already taken off my boots in the car, and there was a fussy baby waiting so I didn't want to take the time to put them back on.

Bodie Ghost Town

The gold mining ghost town of Bodie (now a state historic park) is an interesting place to visit just north of Mono Lake and Lee Vining in central CA. Within one year (1878) this town grew from 20 to 10,000 miners, gamblers, and other entrepreneurs searching for wealth. Today visitors can wander through the deserted streets and peer into old houses and buildings, many of which were abandoned in haste when the last train left town.

Hummingbird Resting

It's not too often that you see these guys resting. This one was perched on a dead tree left by the 2004 fire that hit the area around the town of Julian, CA. The surrounding branches were already mostly black and white in the original photo, so I decided to take it one step further and make the background completely black and white.

Dad says it's probably Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna). There are times the Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) looks similar, though. Maybe Jon or Libby Rowley have some thoughts.
