Field of Color in Solana Beach: Brown-Eyed Susan Flowers

Brown-eyed susan flowers (Rudbeckia hirta) with a field of color behind (mostly statice as seen in my previous photo). No HDR or anything fancy; just nice evening light.

Early Spring - Statice Plant - Solana Beach, CA

I took this photo along the coastline in Solana Beach, CA (north county San Diego). I liked the colors of the statice plant mixed with the green background.

Illuminated Lupin Flower

Illuminated Lupin Flower

A lonely lupin flower shooting up from a field of green, illuminated from behind by the setting sun. I took this photo last night in the hills of Irvine, CA seconds before the sun dipped below the horizon. My camera was only about 10 inches away from the flower, zoomed out to a wide 16mm. This is an HDR merged from 6 exposures 2 stops apart.

California Poppies: Antelope Valley

California Poppies: Antelope Valley

The California Poppies are out in full bloom on the hillsides of Antelope Valley right now, as long as you come at the right time. The poppies close up at night and don't open again until around 9 or 10 am, when the full color slowly spreads across the hillsides. It's amazing to see the gradual spread of color as the flowers open. This photo was taken near my last Desert Bloom photo.

Desert Bloom - Antelope Valley, CA

This beautiful once a year occurrence in the desert is not to be missed: splashes of orange, yellow, green, and purple appearing out of nowhere. The California Poppies tend to steal the show, but I like the mixture of color found in this field. Thanks to Aaron Nystrom for alerting me to the great conditions in the Antelope Valley Poppy Preserve and drawing me a helpful map to the good photo spots.

Upside Down Umbrellas

I'm not sure what these purple flowers are called. Anyone know? Update: Bill has informed me these are shooting stars. This photo is also from Rock Creek in the Sierras (like the last one I posted). I took this while lying down, with the camera about a foot above the ground to isolate these two particular flowers from the rest that were in the field.

Olive-Backed Sunbird

The olive-backed sunbird is the closest thing to a hummingbird that you will find in SE Asia. This particular one kept coming back to these flowers next to the swimming pool complex near where my parents live. I didn't do much swimming that day as I chased him to various flowers to capture a good shot.

Amazing Orchid

One of the many incredible orchids we saw at the special orchid display last year at the Huntington Gardens. God must have had fun designing these.

Glimpse into Glory

I spotted this small yellow flower near Corona Del Mar. It's hard to tell, but the diameter of the flower was less than an inch. Not sure what kind it is. It looks similar to a poppy, but the stamina are different.
