Patio in the Clouds - Mont Blanc Cable Car

This photo shows the top of the Mont Blanc cable car (Aiguille du Midi cable car) in Chamonix, France. At the top of the cable car there's an elevator inside the rock that takes you 140 feet higher to a lookout, which is where I took this photo from at 12,600 feet. This peak is called Aiguille du Midi. This cable car holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 3,400 ft to 12,600 ft. From here you get spectacular views of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps, and the rest of Mont Blanc. From up here you can take the Panoramic Mont Blanc lift which is the highest cable car traverse in the world and which connects France and Italy over the mountains. If you look closely to the left of the "patio" you'll see 2 specks which are eagles soaring in the wind.

Les Jardins de l'Auberge - Restaurant on the Canal - Annecy, France

This restaurant is along the main canal in Annecy, France. Annecy is described by some as the "Clean Venice", or the "Venice of France." It is certainly beautiful and clean, though not as big as Venice, Italy. This was one of the most distinct restaurants along the canal. I took this 3-stop HDR photo at dusk using my gorilla-pod tripod wrapped around a railing.

Mountaineers climbing Mont Blanc - French Alps

Look closely to see 2 groups of mountaineers climbing this glacier, one group near the bottom of the photo, and the other near the top. The climbers in the photo help give a sense of the size of the surrounding crevices and fissures. The photo is zoomed in on a small part of Mont Blanc; the hikers still have a long way to go to the top. Most likely they started from Cosmiques Refuge, the base camp near the top of the Mont Blanc cable car which I mentioned in my previous photo.

Mont Blanc Panorama: Grandes Jorasses and Dent du Geant

I took this panorama on Mont Blanc in the French Alps. There is an impressive cable car that takes you from the town of Chamonix Mont Blanc to Aiguille du Midi (12,602 feet or 3,842 meters), a peak partway up the mountain. The cable car holds the world record for most elevation gained: around 9,200 feet of elevation gain in the 20 minute ride to the top. This photo only shows a tiny fraction of the Alps (French, Italian, and Swiss) that can be seen from the top of the tram. Specifically, the peak on the left is Grandes Jorasses, and the one on the very right is Dent du Geant. Both these peaks lie on the French-Italian border.
