Laguna Beach Waterfall Seascape at Sunset

This is a sweet place at low tide because the waves create this waterfall down these partially submerged rocks. I found this place mostly by accident last Saturday night. This is Woods Cove in Laguna Beach, CA just off Diamond St. and Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Don't miss the orange starfish on the rocks which seemed to be posing for me and makes this photo all the better, I think. Getting completely soaked and eating my Wahoo's dinner cold was my small sacrifice for getting this shot. I have no regrets.

Sydney Harbour Panorama

Sydney Harbor Panorama high res at night (cityscape). I took this panorama photo of the Sydney harbor at night from the north side of the harbor next to Jeffrey St. Wharf. This is one of my favorite views of Sydney Harbour since you can see the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Circular Quay, and the high-rise skyscrapers of the Sydney CBD (Central Business District). This (Kirribilli) is the perfect place for a panorama view of Sydney Harbor.

This is an HDR panorama from 2 angles (each 3 exposures, so 6 photos total). I merged each photo into an HDR using Photomatix and then combined the 2 resulting images as a panorama in Photoshop.

Cathedral Cove Sea Cave

This is Cathedral Cove along the limestone coastline on the north island of New Zealand. This photo was taken from inside a big sea cave, looking out to a limestone pillar farther down on the beach (called Te Hoho Rock). Scenes of the Narnia kids re-entering Narnia from the Chronicles of Narnia (Prince Caspian) film were shot here. This is on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand.

My previous Te Hoho Rock photo was taken from above this sea cave.

Storm in Milford Sound - New Zealand

It rained for much of my short visit to Milford Sound, which isn't surprising considering it's the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest places in the world. Milford Sound has been known to receive 10 inches of rain in the span of 24 hours, which is about as much rain as Los Angeles gets in an entire year. Annual rainfall is over 22 feet (over 6.5 meters). But it isn't just always raining; the weather changed dramatically over the course of my 2-hour boat ride, even breaking up for some sun for a little while. In this photo you can see a new batch of rain descending down the steep glacier-carved peaks.

This is spectacular Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula of the northern island of New Zealand. The limestone sea stack on the beach (called Te Hoho Rock) used to be a sea cave connected to the mainland but it eventually eroded, leaving this pinnacle. I climbed above a different sea cave to get the ferns in the foreground while looking down on Cathedral Cove.

Double Bay Sydney Harbour - Light before the Storm

My father-in-law likes to go exploring in a new place like I do, so when he was visiting Sydney we hopped on a ferry from Circular Quay for the sole purpose of finding out where it went. We ended up here at Double Bay with nice evening light as a storm was brewing. I took this photo from the ferry as we left for the next bay: Rose Bay. I continue to be amazed at how expansive and beautiful this harbour is.

This cool plateau of flat rocks on the beach is found at Sunset Cliffs Park on the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, CA. The jigsaw pattern of cracks in the rocks reminds me of the top of Devil's Postpile near Mammoth Lakes, CA. The purple afterglow show up after the sun had already set as the sky was changing color. I took this photo the day after Christmas in Cabrillo National Monument on the Point Loma Peninsula. This is the "tide-pools" area of the point Loma Lighthouse Park, a short drive down the steep road to the right as you enter the park. It's crazy to think about the powerful wave that left that suspended boulder on the edge. This is a combination of 2 exposures (1 for the sky) - around 5 and 20 second exposures, but this time I didn't use Photomatix or any fancy HDR program.

For the photographers out there, you may be interested to note that this photo was taken at ISO 800, which to me is quite impressive considering how clean it looks. This is one of the most awesome coves along the CA coastline. How can you beat an 80 foot waterfall spilling right onto the beach, in a secluded cove? This is McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Big Sur, CA.

Of course, it would be way cooler to be standing on the beach below right next to (or underneath) the waterfall. I have wanted to do that ever since the first time I saw this falls (and I know the best route down), but have so far restrained myself due to the very clear signs telling you not to go down there. This is the portal, or sea arch rock at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, CA (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park). I took this photo right after the sun dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a yellow-orange glow. At high tide like this it's fun watching the waves funnel through the opening in the rock.

To get this photo, I raced down the windy road to Pfeiffer Beach and then dashed like a madman from my car down the path and across the beach a ways to this spot carrying my tripod and camera backpack. There were some couples on the beach leaving as I arrived, and I think they were a bit bewildered to see me zoom by and throw down my tripod. Gospel Rock Panorama - Gibsons Landing, Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada

This epic view from Gospel Rock was the highlight of my visit to Gibsons Landing on BC's sunshine coast. A local told us the name comes from the days of pirate ships, which found shelter in this harbor. The local pastor would preach the gospel from this rock before blessing the pirate ships as they headed out to sea. I'm not sure if this is true, but it makes a good story.

As a side note, if you're ever at the seaside village of Gibsons Landing and want to find Gospel Rock, don't follow the trail marked on the map as going to Gospel Rock. That's a false gospel that will lead you down the wrong path. We got lost following this trail. Follow the main road towards the west instead and you'll see the rock outcropping on the coastal side of the road at a turn in the road. Oh, and don't keep calling it Preacher's Rock like I did.

Technical photo details: The full-size image is about 40 megapixels (8,174 x 4,815 pixels), combined from 4 photos, each processed from 3 exposures as an HDR in Photomatix before merging into this panorama in Photoshop CS4. Then some dodging & burning, curves, and other minor adjustments were made.

Peaceful Birch Bay

A seagull flies above Birch Bay around sunset. I adjusted the red, green, and blue levels separately to get this surreal effect which conveys the mood of this peaceful evening. This was taken on the same trip up as the previous photo, across the border in Birch Bay, Washington.

Clouds over the Pacific

For a little variety, here's a shot I took out the plane window while landing in Tokyo/Narita on my way back from Indonesia.

Equinox Sunrise at Bunaken

Equinox Sunrise at Bunaken

Equinox sunrise (March 20, 2009) was fun since I was near the equator (about 1.5 degrees north), and with Dad (who is very much aware of such celestial events). Technically, sunrise should have been exactly at 6am, and sunset exactly 6pm. This isn't necessarily the case, though, since our timezones don't always match up exactly to reality. In our case sunrise was 5:50am (at least by my watch). But the part that is true is that everyone gets a 12 hour day, and a 12 hour night. So while I was busy photographing, my dad tried to figure out how far off our time zone was, and whether he could figure out our exact position on the globe. Another fun aspect of Equinox is that the sun rises exactly (due) east on this day everywhere in the world, and at noon you have no shadow whatsoever (this second part is only true on the equator). Of course, this doesn't really say anything about the photo. :)

Andy Rock Climbing at Pirate's Cove

This was last Christmas at Pirate's Cove, a popular place for bouldering. We got there just in time for sunset, and of course my brother Andy immediately did some climbing. This was one of the first photos I took with my Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens.

Sunset Walk

A beautiful evening walk along the pier in South Haven, MI with the sun setting over Lake Michigan. I took this July 24, 2008 after meeting up with some of my relatives who live in this part of Michigan. This was right before leaving on our Israel trip.

Catalina Island from the Air

Catalina Island is barely visible below the clouds in this aerial photo taken near sunset. This was on our way back from our weekend flying trip to Joshua Tree that we took with Amos & Heidi.

Outrigger Spray

On the boat Saturday on our way out to Talikud island. These outriggers are perfect for riding while the boat is moving, and chicken fights when the boat is anchored. Ah, what memories!

Big Corona at Sunset

Big Corona, in Corona Del Mar, is one of my favorite nearby beaches for photography. Though you would never know, only a couple hundred meters away is a busy beach with lots of people.
