Florida Softshell Turtle, or Weird Snorkel Nosed Turtle - Everglades

The most distinct aspect of the Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox) is its snorkel-like nose which you can see prominently in this photo. (But I just like to call it the Weird Snorkel Nosed Turtle.) It's also recognized by its flat leathery carapace (shell). This rather large adult (about 2 feet) crossed the path in front of us right as we started on the Anhinga Trail in Everglades National Park. This trail is a must-see for anyone visiting the Everglades.

You can buy this photo here, with many options including standard prints, canvas gallery wraps, gift cards, mugs, T-shirts and much more.

  • Perfect! Glad you know its taxonomy but are still content to call it weird.
