Peeling Gumbo Limbo, Bathed in Light

A gumbo limbo tree (Bursera simaruba) bathed in evening light. The characteristic peeling bark on this gumbo limbo looks like an open 3-way hatch. The locals like to call these "tourist trees" presumably since the bark reminds them of the sunburnt skin of tourists trying to get a tan. These trees are common in Florida along the coast since they are salt tolerant.
