It rained for much of my short visit to Milford Sound, which isn't surprising considering it's the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest places in the world. Milford Sound has been known to receive 10 inches of rain in the span of 24 hours, which is about as much rain as Los Angeles gets in an entire year. Annual rainfall is over 22 feet (over 6.5 meters). But it isn't just always raining; the weather changed dramatically over the course of my 2-hour boat ride, even breaking up for some sun for a little while. In this photo you can see a new batch of rain descending down the steep glacier-carved peaks. You can buy this photo here, with many options including standard prints, canvas gallery wraps, gift cards, mugs, T-shirts and much more. |
